Essential soft skills required from software engineering students and new graduates

Abstract

The software engineering industry has been on a constant rise in the past decades. This tremendous growth enabled many entry-level positions to emerge for candidates seeking to start their careers in the industry. As a common belief, many think having good technical skills for these positions is enough to be hired and successful in the long term. However, studies emphasized the importance of having soft skills as one of the critical factors, especially for students and new graduates who often target entry-level positions. Therefore, more research is needed to discover the essential soft skills required from software engineering students and new graduates to match industry expectations.

This study adopts a comprehensive approach to understanding the current industry perspective on essential soft skills for software engineering students and new graduates. Six participants from five companies were invited to share their views through a survey and a one-to-one interview to gather insights. The data collected from these interactions were then analyzed to identify situations where soft skills played a pivotal role.

According to the results, communication, responsibility, and teamwork were found to be the most needed soft skills in entry-level positions. Similarly, integrity and interpersonal skills were also highlighted by the participants. Moreover, results indicated that in addition to flexibility and professionalism skills, students and new graduates also lacked all the essential soft skills needed for entry-level positions, except for integrity. The results of this study also matched previous research findings revealing similar soft skills.

Ohjelmistoala on ollut jatkuvassa nousussa viime vuosikymmeninä. Tämä kasvu on mahdollistanut monien aloitustason työpaikkojen syntymisen hakijoille, jotka ovat aloittamassa uransa alalla. Yleinen mielipide on, että hyvät tekniset taidot riittävät palkatuksi tulemiseen ja menestymiseen pitkällä aikavälillä. Tutkimukset ovat kuitenkin korostaneet pehmeiden taitojen merkitystä kriittisenä tekijänä erityisesti opiskelijoille ja vastavalmistuneille. Lisää tutkimusta tarvitaan selvittämään, mitä keskeisiä taitoja ohjelmistotekniikan opiskelijoilta ja vastavalmistuneilta tarvitaan, jotta he pystyvät vastaamaan alan odotuksiin.

Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastellaan alan tämänhetkistä näkemystä ohjelmistotekniikan opiskelijoiden ja vastavalmistuneiden tarpeellisista pehmeistä taidoista. Kuusi yrityksen edustajaa viidestä eri yrityksestä osallistui tiedon keräämiseen vastaamalla kyselylomakkeeseen ja antamalla yksilöhaastattelun. Kerätyistä tiedoista pyrittiin tunnistamaan tilanteet, joissa pehmeät taidot ovat ratkaisevassa roolissa.

Tulokset osoittavat, että kommunikointitaidot, vastuullisuus ja tiimityö ovat keskeisimpiä pehmeitä taitoja aloitustason työtehtävissä. Rehellisyys ja vuorovaikutustaidot korostuivat myös vastauksissa. Tulokset myös osoittavat, että opiskelijoista ja vastavalmistuneista puuttuivat joustavuuden ja ammattimaisuuden lisäksi kaikki aloitustason työtehtäviin tarvittavat olennaiset pehmeät taidot rehellisyyttä lukuun ottamatta. Tämän tutkielman tulokset vastaavat myös aikaisempien tutkimusten tuloksia, joissa samankaltaiset pehmeät taidot ovat tulleet esille.
