Mobility as a service : challenges of implementation in small cities

Abstract

The continuous increase in the population of cities is creating new challenges for the mobility sector. This problem may be particularly acute in small and medium-sized cities, where many problems may already exist, including those related to funding and the state of infrastructure. Mobility as a Service can act as a possible solution to overcome the mobility problems of residents in urban environments, but as it is a young concept, more studies are needed.

The main part of the paper was conducted as a literature review. The theoretical part showed the lack of literature that relates to the implementation of MaaS in small cities, which required analyzing already existing information and an attempt to apply this knowledge in relation to the case under consideration.

Empirical data was collected by conducting a survey among the residents of small cities, which made it possible to identify the most important problems related to mobility that people are concerned about. The majority of respondents were from the city of Lappeenranta, but there were also participants from other cities in Finland.
