Performance of unethical industries in London’s Stock Exchange during the years 2014-2024

Abstract

This Bachelor’s thesis examines the performance of stocks that are listed in the unethical industries in the London’s Stock Exchange from the start of year 2014 to the start of year 2024. The performance is examined by creating a total portfolio of the four unethical industries and creating portfolios each individual unethical industry which are alcohol, defence and aerospace, gambling, and tobacco industries. The total unethical portfolio is compared to the FTSE 100 index which works as market index in this study. The individual unethical industry portfolios are compared to each other and the market index. The comparisons are done by looking at returns, risks and risk-free performance indicators, Sharpe ratio, Treynor ratio and Jensen alpha.

The results of the study are in line with the varying results of the previous studies since the unethical portfolio was able to outperform the market index. The defence and aerospace industry performed the best out of the four on all the comparisons. The second-best performing industry was gambling industry. The alcohol and tobacco industries performed similarly to each other not being able to outperform the market.

Tämä kandidaatin työ tarkastelee epäeettisiin toimialoihin merkittyjen osakkeiden suoriutumista Lontoon pörssissä vuoden 2014 alusta vuoden 2024 alkuun. Suoriutumista tutkitaan luomalla kokonaisportfolio kaikista neljästä epäeettisestä toimialasta ja luomalla omat portfoliot jokaiselle neljälle epäeettiselle toimialalle, jotka ovat alkoholi, puolustus ja ilmailu, uhkapeli ja tupakka toimialat. Epäeettistä kokonaisportfoliota verrataan FTSE100 indeksiin, joka toimii markkinaindeksinä tässä tutkielmassa. Yksittäisiä epäeettisiä toimialaportfolioita verrataan toisiinsa ja markkinaindeksiin. Vertailut tehdään käyttäen tuottoja, riskejä ja riskikorjattuja suoriutumismittareita, Sharpen lukua, Treynorin lukua ja Jensenin alfaa.

Tutkimuksen tulokset ovat linjassa aikaisempien tutkimusten vaihtelevien tulosten kanssa, epäeettisen portfolion suoriutuessa markkinaindeksiä paremmin. Puolustus ja ilmailu teollisuus suoriutui neljästä toimialasta parhaiten kaikissa vertailuissa. Toisiksi parhaiten suoriutunut toimiala oli uhkapelitoimiala. Alkoholi ja tupakka toimialat suoriutuivat samalla tavoin toisiinsa nähden eivätkä ne pystyneet suoriutumaan markkina indeksiä paremmin.
