Cryptoeconomics through the lens of Schumpeter's creative destruction : the creative destruction of money as we know it

Abstract

Cryptoeconomics is a new research discipline under the study of economics that has not been researched extensively. In recent years, the crypto space - among cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology - has grown immensely. Research intertwining cryptoeconomics with traditional economics is gaining more ground but is still in its infancy. Despite the emergence of cryptoeconomics as a force to be reckoned with in finance, the topic has not been researched sufficiently.

This study aims to explore cryptoeconomics through the lens of Schumpeter’s creative destruction concept, and how the emergence of cryptoeconomics is destroying the current traditional financial landscape. Literature on cryptoeconomics, cryptocurrencies, blockchain technology and traditional financial systems is explored. The empirical section of the study examines retail investors sentiment and thoughts on the developing segment of cryptoeconomics in conjunction with Schumpeter’s creative destruction concept. The research was completed as a qualitative study, where empirical data was gathered through a semi-structured questionnaire. The empirical portion of the study presents the sentiments of retail investors in various forms of different graphs, that support the research questions of the thesis.

The thesis research concluded that cryptoeconomics is a burgeoning field of economics and finance, that is gaining ground against the backdrop of traditional financial institutions. The study concluded that the principles of creative destruction - innovation, competition, entrepreneurship, and technological advancement - manifest within the realm of cryptoeconomics, supported by theoretical literature and the empirical findings of the thesis.

Kryptotaloustiede on taloustieteen uusi tutkimusala, jota ei ole tutkittu vielä laajasti. Viime vuosina kryptojen maailma – muun muassa kryptovaluutat ja lohkoketjuteknologia – ovat kasvaneet valtavasti. Kryptotaloustieteen ja perinteisen taloustieteen yhdistävät tutkimukset ovat saamassa enemmän jalansijaa, mutta tämä tieteentutkimus on vielä lapsenkengissään. Siitä huolimatta, että kryptotaloustiede on noussut perinteisen taloustieteen rinnalle varteenotettavana voimana, aihetta ei ole tutkittu vielä tarpeeksi syvällisesti.

Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on tutkia kryptotaloustiedettä Schumpeterin luovan tuhon konseptin kautta ja tarkastella miten kryptotaloustieteen ilmaantuminen tuhoaa perinteistä talousjärjestelmää. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan kirjallisuutta kryptotaloustieteeseen, kryptovaluuttoihin, lohkoketjuteknologiaan ja perinteiseen taloustieteeseen liittyen. Tutkimuksen empiirisessä osiossa tarkastellaan yksityissijoittajien mielipiteitä ja ajatuksia kryptotalouden kehittymiseen ja Schumpeterin luovan tuhon konseptiin liittyen. Tutkimus on toteutettu laadullisena tutkimuksena, jossa empiiristä tietoa kerättiin puolistrukturoidulla kyselylomakkeella. Tutkimuksen empiirisessä osassa esitetään yksityissijoittajien mielipiteitä erilaisten kaavioiden kautta, jotka tukevat työn tutkimuskysymyksiä.

Tutkimuksessa todettiin, että kryptotaloustiede on kasvava taloustieteen ja rahoituksen ala, joka valtaa jalansijaa perinteiseltä rahoitusalalta. Tutkimuksessa todettiin, että luovan tuhon konseptin periaatteet – innovatiivisuus, kilpailu, yrittäjyys ja teknologinen kehitys – ilmenevät kryptotaloustieteessä teoreettisen kirjallisuuden ja työn empiiristen havaintojen tukemana.
