Risk management of wind power producers in short electricity markets

Abstract

The rise of renewable energy sources is changing the current electricity system. The continuous development of renewable energy sources also brings new challenges on the electricity grid to always keep the system in balance. Renewable energy such as wind and solar power are intermittent in nature, which creates new complications to the traditional energy system. The energy system needs constant balancing from the production and consumption sides with different reserve products to keep the network operating.

Wind power is not a traditional occupant in the reserve markets, but it has a lot of potential to become a regular one. The aim of this thesis is to understand the possibilities and challenges the wind power producers might face when participating in the reserve markets. The research showed that wind power producers already have a lot of potential to gain from the reserve markets.

Some of the products are easily accessible and the results show a positive outcome. However, some the products are not yet feasible for wind energy, but as the research suggested, they might be a better option in the future.

Uusiutuvien energialähteiden lisääntyminen vaikuttaa nykyiseen sähköjärjestelmään. Uusiutuvien energialähteiden jatkuva kehitys tuo myös uusia haasteita sähköverkon järjestelmän tasapainon ylläpitoon. Uusiutuvat energianlähteet, kuten tuuli- ja aurinkovoima, ovat luonteeltaan hetkellisiä, mikä luo uusia haasteita perinteiseen energiajärjestelmään. Energiajärjestelmä tarvitsee jatkuvaa tasapainottamista tuotanto- ja kulutuspuolelta eri reservituotteiden muodossa verkon jatkuvan toiminnan varmistamiseksi.

Tuulivoima ei ole perinteinen tekijä reservimarkkinoilla, mutta sillä on paljon potentiaalia jatkuvasti kehittyvillä reservimarkkinoilla. Tämän opinnäytetyön tavoitteena on ymmärtää erilaiset mahdollisuudet ja haasteet, joita tuulivoiman tuottajat voivat kohdata osallistuessaan reservimarkkinoille.

Tutkimus osoitti, että tuulivoimantuottajilla on jo nykyisellään paljon potentiaalia hyötyä reservimarkkinoilla toimimisesta. Jotkut tuotteista ovat jo tällä hetkellä helposti saavutettavissa ja tulokset vaikuttavat positiivisilta. Osa tuotteista ei kuitenkaan ole vielä käyttökelpoisia tuulivoimaan, mutta tehdyn tutkimuksen mukaan niidenkin mahdollisuudet voivat parantua tulevaisuudessa.
