Tiivistelmä
The objective of this thesis was to inspect the applicability of the Science Based Targets for Nature Framework for a company in the retail sector. The study was framed within the context of global and sector- specific efforts to combat biodiversity loss and climate change, emphasizing the need for companies to adopt sustainable practices.
The research begins with a comprehensive literature review on biodiversity, its global significance, and the specific impacts of the agricultural sector and alcoholic beverage production industry. It then delves into the key changes in the operating environment for companies from a regulation standpoint related to biodiversity.
The case study of the thesis involves the Finnish alcohol monopoly Alko, including a summary of its current sustainability strategies, materiality analysis, and climate impact assessment. The study employs a methodical approach using the SBTN Framework for the case company.
Key findings reveal that the case company faces several challenges in implementing the SBTN framework, primarily due to the complexity of its supply chain and the need for comprehensive local data collection and analysis. The thesis provides specific recommendations to address these challenges, focusing on enhancing Alko's supply chain transparency. These recommendations aim to support Alko in reducing its overall environmental footprint and contributing to broader sustainability goals. Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena oli tutkia Science Based Targets for Nature -viitekehyksen soveltuvuutta vähittäiskaupan alan yritykselle. Työssä tutkittiin globaaleja ja alakohtaisia ponnisteluja biodiversiteetin häviämisen ja ilmastonmuutoksen torjumiseksi, korostaen yritysten tarvetta omaksua kestäviä toimintatapoja.
Tutkimus alkaa kattavalla kirjallisuuden katsauksella biodiversiteetistä, sen globaalista tilasta ja merkityksestä maataloussektorille ja alkoholijuomateollisuudelle. Seuraavaksi tarkastellaan keskeisiä muutoksia yritysten toimintaympäristössä sääntelyn näkökulmasta liittyen biodiversiteettiin.
Työn tapaustutkimus käsittelee Suomen alkoholimonopoli Alkoa, ja sisältää yhteenvedon sen nykyisestä kestävän kehityksen strategiasta, olennaisuusanalyysistä ja ilmastovaikutuksista. Tutkimuksessa käytetään systemaattista lähestymistapaa hyödyntäen SBTN-viitekehystä.
Keskeiset havainnot osoittavat, että SBTN-viitekehyksen soveltamisessa Alkolle on joitakin haasteita liittyen sen toimitusketjun monimutkaisuuteen ja kattavan paikkatiedon ja sen analysoinnin tarpeen vuoksi. Työ esittää suosituksia näiden haasteiden ratkaisemiseksi, keskittyen Alkon toimitusketjun läpinäkyvyyden parantamiseen. Näiden suositusten tavoitteena on tukea Alkoa vähentämään negatiivisia luontovaikutuksiaan ja edistämään kestäviä toimintatapoja läpi toimitusketjun.
