Tiivistelmä

This thesis embarks on a descriptive journey of the internationalisation processes implemented by multinationals, analysing specific strategies and in detail a strategic management model that has spread especially in the construction sector and is becoming increasingly common and compulsory in several countries. The process of internationalisation involves numerous studies and research studies, and the phenomenon of applying specific strategies is becoming a key factor in the success of companies that decide to internationalise.

Furthermore, in the development of this thesis, qualitative data was collected within the BIM Competence Centre of the Hilti group in Rotterdam, where the undersigned undertook a sixmonth internship, which covered known and new topics related to the course of studies undertaken. This combination of the studies undertaken and the experience in a multinational company allowed for a better delineation of the purpose of the thesis, giving a clearer idea of some of the strategies applied by large companies, in this case in a specific sector with the collection of data in a specific company, the Hilti Group.

The goal of this thesis revolves around the final evaluation of a possible implementation of this new strategy, through theoretical investigations of the notions absorbed in the studies and the data collected through descriptive and thematic analyses in collaboration with interviews with industry professionals, in a specific developing market with enormous growth opportunities such as that of Central and South Asia.

In particular, the additional topic of the studies conducted belongs to a strategic denominator model, Building Information Modeling (BIM), of which we will present the first developments, the need to be included in executive processes, application methodologies, application requirements and the incorporation of its benefits.

As of today, BIM is an ISO (International Standard Organisation) standard, which has become mandatory in several European Union countries, and we will do an in-depth and detailed analysis to better explain what BIM is.

The challenge associated with its implementation in the Central and South Asian market stems from several reasons, including: the large number of companies that are relocating, in different ways and with different applications, to this specific area; the rapid population growth and consequent urbanisation that requires a sustainable, safe and efficient implementation; the laws imposed by some states such as Japan, South Korea and China; and the growth and need to improve innovative models in a sector, such as construction, that needs the best for its continuous development.

The final part of the thesis is presented with the development of a theoretical framework proposed by Pankaj Ghemawat in 2001 at Harvard University, called CAGE framework, which studies and analyses the distances in cultural, administrative, geographical and economic factors of the countries in relation. Thus, once the data was collected, we were able to develop questions for qualitative research that was refined through the collection of interviews with BIM professionals and practitioners, who deliberated on details fundamental to the results, and who made suggestions and conclusions regarding the possible implementation of BIM in view of the factors collected through the analysis and interviews.
