Tiivistelmä

In today's digital age, the demand for authentication techniques that are both safe and userfriendly has become of utmost importance, given the escalating risks presented by hackers. Conventional password-based systems are becoming more and more susceptible to attacks, which is why it is necessary to create stronger and more resilient alternatives. This thesis examines the ideas and goals of passkeys as well as the European e-ID system as sophisticated forms of digital identification. Passkeys, endorsed by prominent technology companies such as Google, Apple, and Microsoft, employ public-key cryptography to bolster security and improve user experience. Simultaneously, the European e-ID system, governed by the eIDAS legislation, seeks to provide a uniform structure for electronic identity among EU member states, guaranteeing safe digital transactions and adherence to rigorous data protection regulations.

Furthermore, this study aims to address three fundamental inquiries: The fundamental ideas and aims of passkeys & European e-ID scheme are to provide a secure and standardized system for digital identification and authentication across Europe. Passkeys operate as a digital authenticating technique by verifying the identity of a user. They have distinct advantages and drawbacks. European e-ID scheme may be differentiated from passkeys based on their distinct qualities and criteria. This thesis does a thorough comparison study to assess the merits and drawbacks of both authentication techniques. It offers useful insights regarding their potential implications for subsequent acceptance and implementation.

The results of this study enhance the overall discussion on managing digital identities by providing a thorough analysis that may serve as a guide for legislators, technological developers, and security specialists. This paper examines the legislative, technological, and user experience elements of passkeys and EU e-ID system to identify the significant difficulties and possibilities involved in their implementation. In conclusion, this thesis emphasizes the significance of implementing safe and effective digital authentication processes to protect sensitive data, increase user confidence, and facilitate smooth digital communication in an ever more linked society.
