Tiivistelmä
Integrations have existed as long as software systems have been connected. However, the management of integrations in enterprises has changed over the decades. In recent years, there has been significant growth in the number of cloud-based integration platforms, and these platforms have also evolved in their features. This challenges integration platforms’ decisions in companies but, at the same time, provides new kinds of opportunities in the field. In this research, I focus on the challenges and opportunities, the decision-making process, and the definition and evolution of cloud-based integration platforms.
The main research question is "How are cloud-based integration platforms changing integration practices?". To approach this main question, I collected four qualitative data sets and analysed them via a scoping review, thematic analysis, and grounded theory models. The results of these empirical studies focus on the definition and the meaning of cloud-based integration platforms, the decisions made in enterprises around cloud-based integration platforms, the experiences and challenges around cloud-based integration platforms, and the potential of the future cloud-based integration platforms.
In my results, I highlight a gap in the research on cloud-based integration platforms, especially in the business approaches taken and the decision models adopted. I also emphasise the importance of further work on the cloud-based integration platform terminology. Furthermore, I propose that the future of cloud-based integration platforms is already here, as these platforms have capabilities supported by emerging technologies such as AI and hyperautomation. This will affect the transformative effect of the more business-driven cloud-based integration platforms in companies overall.
