Impact of COVID-19 to credit ratings on Nordic industry sectors

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the economies, financial markets and societies of various countries, causing economic uncertainty. This thesis examines whether the COVID-19 pandemic affected the credit ratings of large companies in the Nordic countries and how the credit ratings of large Nordic companies changed during the pandemic. The credit rating data retrieved from LSEG Workspace service is based on the StarMine Combined Credit Risk model. The results show that the credit ratings of large-cap companies on the Nasdaq and Euronext Oslo stock exchanges deteriorated in several industries during the pandemic. However, the magnitude of the deterioration varied across industries.

COVID19–pandemia heijastui eri valtioiden talouksiin, rahoitusmarkkinoihin sekä yhteiskuntiin aiheuttaen taloudellista epävarmuutta. Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan, vaikuttiko COVID-19 pandemia suurten yritysten luottoluokituksiin pohjoismaissa ja miten pohjoismaisten suuryritysten luottoluokitukset muuttuivat pandemian aikana. Tutkielmassa käytetty StarMine Combined Credit Risk -malliin perustuva luottoluokitusdata on haettu LSEG:n Workspace-palvelusta. Tulokset osoittavat Nasdaqin ja Euronext’in Oslon pörssin large-cap –yritysten luottoluokitusten heikenneen useilla toimialoilla pandemian aikana. Heikkenemisen voimakkuudessa havaittiin kuitenkin toimialakohtaisia eroja.
