Tiivistelmä

The rapid increase in installations of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems, the growing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), and the electrification of the heating sector make the residential sector a prime candidate to provide flexibility services to facilitate the sustainable transformation of the energy system. Demand response (DR) is one potential solution with which residential consumers can leverage their flexibility services and support the grid during the time of need. To extract the flexibility from the residential sector, understanding the consumer decision-making process is of utmost importance.

The main objective of this doctoral dissertation is to conduct a comprehensive study on residential consumers’ decision-making in the context of providing electricity demand flexibility. To achieve this objective, the research undertakes the following tasks: identification of motivators for consumers to enroll in DR across different socioeconomic groups, quantification of consumer willingness to enroll their household loads in DR, investigation of variation in consumer willingness to enroll across diverse groups, mathematical modeling of consumer decision-making to enroll in DR, analysis of the consumer enrollment over time, and provision of a pricing strategy for aggregators to leverage the flexible loads of residential consumers.

The methodology adopted in this study is based on several statistical and mathematical models to develop a consumer decision-making model. A survey on consumers’ willingness to enroll in DR was developed for the target group of Finnish residential consumers, with the aim of understanding their main motivators for enrollment. Further, based on the survey, also the influence of different motivator preferences was analyzed. An agentbased modeling tool was developed to simulate the residential consumer enrollment. The key findings highlight the various factors influencing consumer decision-making and the distinctive sociodemographic patterns affecting preferences among consumers.

The implications of these findings provide practical insights and guidance for DR service providers, policymakers, academic scholars, and others involved in provision of flexibility services, facilitating the design of residential DR programs while maximizing enrollment for widespread adoption.
