The impact of chrome ore and steel production volumes on high-carbon ferrochrome prices : a global and Indian market analysis

Abstract

This thesis investigates whether chrome ore and crude steel production volumes influence the price of high-carbon ferrochrome with a particular focus on the Global and Indian market. Ferrochrome, a critical input in stainless steel manufacturing, is subject to price volatility driven by global supply dynamics and domestic policy constraints. Using monthly time-series data from reputable industry sources, the study applies multiple regression analysis and elasticity theory to assess the relationship between production volumes and price behavior.

The results show that global chrome ore production is a statistically significant and economically relevant predictor of ferrochrome prices in India while crude steel production particularly at the global level has limited explanatory power. Elasticity estimates reveal that global supply responds elastically to price changes whereas the Indian chrome ore market shows signs of structural and policy-induced distortion.

The study contributes to the underexplored field of ferrochrome pricing and offers practical insights for policymakers and industry actors seeking to manage risks in raw material markets.

Tämä pro gradu -tutkielma tarkastelee kromimalmin ja raakateräksen tuotantomäärien vaikutusta korkeahiilisen ferrokromin hinnan muodostumiseen globaalisti ja paikallisesti Intian markkinoilla. Ferrokromi on olennainen seosaine ruostumattoman teräksen valmistuksessa ja sen hintavaihteluihin vaikuttavat sekä globaalit tarjontatekijät että kansalliset sääntelyolosuhteet. Tutkimuksessa käytettiin kuukausittaista aikasarjadataa luotettavista teollisuuslähteistä ja analyysimenetelmänä sovellettiin monimuuttujaregressiota ja hintajouston teoriaa.

Tulokset osoittavat, että globaalilla tasolla kromimalmin tuotanto on tilastollisesti merkitsevä tekijä ferrokromin hinnanmuodostuksessa Intiassa. Raakateräksen tuotantomäärät, erityisesti globaalisti osoittautuivat selvästi heikommiksi selittäviksi muuttujiksi. Hintajoustoarviot paljastavat, että globaalin tarjonnan reaktio hinnanmuutoksiin on joustavaa, kun taas Intian markkinoilla tarjonta on rakenteellisesti rajoittunutta ja sääntelystä vääristynyttä.

Tutkimus täydentää niukkaa akateemista kirjallisuutta ferrokromin hintamekanismeista ja tarjoaa käytännönläheisiä havaintoja päätöksenteon tueksi raaka-ainemarkkinoiden hallintaan.
