Tiivistelmä
The study explores the application and effectiveness of the freemium business model within the distinct context of AI as a Service (AIaaS) companies. It specifically investigates the unique benefits and challenges that arise from inherent AI complexities, such as high computational costs, intensive data requirements, and significant ethical considerations. Employing a qualitative methodology, the study uses thematic analysis to interpret data gathered from semi-structured interviews with professionals and insights from industry podcasts used as a secondary source. The findings reveal that the primary benefits include accelerated user acquisition and rapid, data driven product improvement, creating a powerful data flywheel effect through lean, cost-effective iteration. These advantages are counterbalanced by significant challenges, notably the high computational cost per user, converting users conditioned by a free mentality, designing premium tiers that provide clear value without cannibalizing the free offering and the critical need to balance high operational costs against the imperative of maintaining user trust and regulations. The findings culminate in a set of Primary Empirical Conclusions (PECs) that model these dynamic interactions. This study extends freemium theory by contextualizing it for the AIaaS sector. It offers valuable, actionable insights and suggestions for future work for academics and practitioners on navigating freemium adoption in AIaaS.
