Tiivistelmä

The purpose of this thesis is to develop and validate a comprehensive framework of Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for assessing value creation in Non-Timber Forest Product (NTFP). The study employs a sequential mixed-method approach based on the understanding of global value chain, political ecology and embeddedness theories. A systematic literature review of 78 empirical studies identified recurring value-driving themes, which were synthesized into six KPI categories: market access & distribution efficiency, processing & value addition, product quality & standards, socioeconomic & cultural impact, sustainability & policy support, and stakeholder collaboration & ecosystem performance.

The framework was empirically validated through responses from businesses, NGOs, and academics, revealing both consensus and divergence in priorities. While business actors emphasized market and quality factors, NGOs highlighted livelihoods and sustainability.

The study draws a conclusion that the suggested KPI framework can bring theory and practice together, serve as a diagnostic and planning tool, and become helpful in policymaking, research, and practice. Although promising, the applicability of the framework would be improved by means of cross-regional validations and outcome replications of performance. Finally, the study brings in a new scientific evaluation tool to increase environmental sustainability, equity, and resilience of forest-related value chains.
