WordPress powers a large portion of the web, with businesses, people, and organisations relying on it for their online presence. However, the maintenance required for WordPress websites involves continuous effort on the host’s part. While large organisations often have dedicated teams for this maintenance, small to medium-enterprises have to struggle with limited resources.
This thesis explores WordPress website maintenance strategies and tools to automate and supplement manual testing while trying to be cost-effective and have the WordPress websites perform with faultless performance. The study uses interviews to qualitatively assess the best tools currently available, and how to identify them.
The results of the analysis in this thesis found that tools focused on automated security updates and all-in-one productivity tools are the most cost-effective due to the time saved on manual tasks and minimization of risks. Security tools such as Patchstack and productivity tools such as ManageWP were found to be the most effective when interviewing one company. The most appealing tools were ones that saved time, were easy to test, and had a cheap option to trial the tool with no long-term commitments.
