This thesis examines the potential of implementing an Urban Track System (UTS) in Lahti, Finland, with special focus on the system’s viability from an economic, environmental, and public standpoint. In order to assess UTS in comparison to other forms of transportation, such as buses, private vehicles, and micro-mobility solutions, the study uses comparative analysis. Survey results were paired with cost-benefit analyses and emissions modeling to give a thorough picture of UTS’s place in Lahti’s transportation system.
The findings indicate that the UTS might make a significant contribution to sustainable transportation by cutting greenhouse gas emissions, reducing traffic congestion, and offering a reliable and efficient transit option. However, the system is not intended to replace existing modes of transportation; rather, it would enhance them with a well-balanced multimodal approach. Public perceptions of UTS are generally positive, according to survey results, while issues with inclusivity, project delivery, and long-term dependability still exist.
The study concludes that why UTS requires substantial initial investment and faces technical challenges, its long-term benefits make it a promising addition to Lahti’s urban transport system. A small-scale pilot project is now being created in partnership with local partners to assess viability and secure public-private funding. Policymakers, urban planners, and other stakeholders interested in promoting sustainable transportation options in medium-sized European cities may benefit from the research.
