Tiivistelmä

Sustainability has now become a key focus for the food industry particularly in Finland where regional food systems aim to maintain the balance between economic, social and environmental responsibility. The region of Kymenlaakso food companies are known for the factors such as regional collaboration, circular-economy initiatives and sustainable production. Yet there is limited empirical understanding of how their sustainable business models and sustainable value networks operate together in practice. The research investigates how food industry organizations within the Kymenlaakso region integrate sustainable business models with sustainable value networks to in order to create sustainability-oriented value. The research shed light on its findings on sustainability-oriented business models and value network theories which lead to the creation of a modified Sustainability-Oriented Business Model Canvas as a practical framework that connects organizational business model components with network-based relationships. Research methodology involves a qualitative research approach and thematic analysis was used to analyse data. Primary data was collected through semi structured interviews and secondary data was collected through published journal articles, books and company websites to support and contextualize the findings. Finally, this study offers a valuable practical framework for the companies in the food industry who seek to integrate sustainable business models and sustainable value network perspectives when developing more sustainable food systems. Even though the results are based on the findings limited to a significant region in Finland but offer indicative insights for similar contexts.
