Tutkimus toteutettiin konstruktiivisena tapaustutkimuksena yhdistäen kirjallisuustutkimukseen perustuva teoreettinen viitekehys kohdeyrityksen empiiriseen aineistoon.
The objective of this master’s thesis was to develop a cost-based pricing and contribution margin calculation model for a small and medium-sized enterprise operating in the construction industry, as well as to improve the company’s profitability management. The starting point of the study was the observation that the company’s pricing practices were not fully based on up-to-date cost information, which made it difficult to assess the profitability of hourly work.
The study was conducted as a constructive case study by combining a theoretical framework based on literature with empirical data from the case company. The theoretical part was based on literature related to cost accounting, contribution margin calculation, and pricing, forming the basis for the research framework. The empirical data consisted of financial and cost data analysis, pricing practices, and the breakdown of the cost structure. The methods included cost and contribution margin analyses to evaluate current pricing and to identify key development areas.
The results showed that the development of hourly billing rates did not fully correspond to the increase in labor and overhead costs. The allocation of fixed costs and the consideration of actual labor costs were identified as key factors affecting pricing accuracy. In terms of product sales, monitoring contribution margins was possible, but the practices could be further systematized.
The main outcome of the study was the development of a pricing and calculation tool based on the actual cost structure, which supports financial decision-making, improves pricing transparency, and enables more predictable profitability management. In addition, the study provided recommendations for improving the pricing process and cost monitoring.
