Tiivistelmä
Uncertainty has increased in the world and hence the risks associated with business operations. This thesis aims to provide more information on how firms have survived through crises in the past, so they can prepare better for the future. This thesis investigates the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the capital structure of non-financial firms listed in the OMXH25 index. The capital structure changes of the non-financial firms are examined by utilizing fixed effect models and descriptive statistics. This thesis covers years 2016-2023.
The results of the thesis indicated positive relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and capital structure. However, the need for external financing is lower for bigger, more liquid and profitable firms. Dividing the capital structure into short-term and long-term debt, the results indicate that the firms replaced their short-term debt with long-term debt. However, the results vary between sectors. The thesis also indicated that financial constraints reduce the firms’ willingness to use short-term financing.
