Tiivistelmä

This thesis examines the current adoption and future outlook of on-site renewable energy and green practices among companies operating in the Kymenlaakso region of Finland. The study aims to understand the extent to which firms currently utilize on-site renewable energy systems, how adoption varies across company sizes and sectors, and how companies plan to develop these investments in the coming years. The research is based on survey data collected from 58 companies through a structured online questionnaire, and the analysis combines descriptive quantitative methods with qualitative thematic analysis of open-ended responses.

The results show that sustainability practices are already widely implemented among companies, particularly energy efficiency improvements and waste reduction measures. Approximately 53% of the surveyed companies currently operate on-site renewable energy systems, and this share is expected to increase gradually to about 60% by 2028 and potentially reach around 67% by 2035. Heat pump systems and solar photovoltaic installations are the most common technologies, while other solutions such as wind power and bioenergy remain relatively rare. Future investment plans indicate continued reliance on established technologies, especially solar PV and heat pump systems.

Overall, the findings suggest that companies in Kymenlaakso adopt renewable energy solutions cautiously and incrementally. Long-term cost savings, energy security, and corporate sustainability strategies act as key drivers of investment, while high upfront costs, regulatory uncertainty, and technical constraints remain important barriers. The study highlights how regional industrial structure, company size, and economic considerations shape the pace and direction of decentralized renewable energy adoption.
