The effects of innovation on firm financial performance : a comprehensive study on European technology firms

Tiivistelmä
This thesis examines the effects of green innovation and general innovation on the financial performance of technology companies in Europe. It addresses both accounting-based financial performance and market-based financial performance separately and utilizes environmental innovation score and green revenue share as the proxies for green innovation and R&D intensity as the proxy for general innovation.
Utilizing panel regression and firm-specific data from 2007 to the end of 2024, the results indicate a generally negative effect between both innovation types and accounting-based financial performance in the short run. On the other hand, when the results are observed after a one-year period, the models suggest a generally positive relation between the innovation metrics and accounting-based financial performance. Weak indicators of non-linear relationships are also identified, with the possibility of U-shaped and inverse U-shaped relationships. For market-based performance, the general innovation models identified weak to moderate effects of U-shaped relationships, while the effects for green innovation were negative or statistically insignificant.
These results further illustrate the high complexity of the relationships between innovation metrics and the financial performance of companies. With the model limitations accounted for, these findings can be utilized by the managers of technology firms in identifying the impact of their innovation efforts on the accounting- and market-based financial performance of their firms of interest. Hyödyntäen paneeliregressiota ja yrityskohtaista dataa vuodesta 2007 vuoteen 2024, tutkimustulokset osoittavat yleisesti ottaen negatiivista yhteyttä molempien innovaatiotyyppien sekä finanssipohjaisen suorituskyvyn välillä lyhyellä aikavälillä. Kuitenkin, pidemmällä aikavälillä, tutkimustulokset osoittavat yhteyden kääntyvän yleisesti ottaen positiiviseksi.
