Suurin teoreettinen tuottopotentiaali mFRR-kapasiteettimarkkinalta oli noin 66 500 €/a 1 MW valaistustehoa kohti. Toisena jatkotutkimuksen aiheena on eri kaupunkien välisten valaistuskuormien kokoaminen eli aggregointi. The aim of this master’s thesis was to study the feasibility of street lighting in the Finnish electricity reserve market and to assess the income potential in the form of a feasibility study. The purpose was to investigate whether a city the size of Kuopio could act as a reserve supplier in the electricity market with its street lighting, assess the most suitable reserve product and the revenue potential.
As a result, the most suitable reserve product for street lighting was found to be the manual frequency restoration reserve (mFRR). The available yearly hours for the mFRR capacity market were determined and the potential revenues from the capacity market were calculated for different utilization rates based on the 2025 price data from Fingrid's Open Data service. In addition, the potential revenue from mFRR energy activation market was determined.
The maximum theoretical revenue potential from the mFRR capacity market was approximately 66 500 €/a per 1 MW load. In addition, it was concluded that the potential revenue from mFRR energy activation market was in the range 600 – 4300 €/a depending on the energy fees. However, the revenue calculations include uncertainties, such as the actual utilization rate and the actual prices will be based on market conditions. The practical implementation of reserve control via the service provider and software interfaces was left as a topic for further research. Another topic of further research is the aggregation of lighting loads between different cities.
