Benefits of Automation in Manufacturing: Analysis of MES in Production Planning and Daily Management

Abstract

This research examines the complexities inherent in production planning and day-to-day operational control, and explores how these challenges can be mitigated through the implementation of a Manufacturing Execution System (MES). The proposed approach aims to complement the existing ERP system while reducing dependence on paper-based processes and Excel spreadsheets on the production floor. The research focuses exclusively on resolving identified challenges using MES, excluding alternative software solutions. Ten thematic categories of challenges were identified: detailed planning, change management, deviation handling, information flow, quality gate implementation, production reporting, traceability, transparency, pending tasks, and non-value-adding work. Primary data collection was conducted through semi-structured and unstructured interviews. Findings indicate that most challenges can be fully or partially mitigated through MES implementation, while detailed planning would require an Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) system. These results provide practical insights for manufacturing firms seeking to diagnose operational inefficiencies and evaluate MES as a potential solution.
