In this thesis different types of shotgun sports and soil contamination reports from various shotgun grounds in Finland are reviewed. The reviewed reports originate from years 1997-2025. Results of these reports are compared to the types of shotgun sports and to models of theoretical distribution of the shot pellets on the grounds. The literature review consists of various possible contaminants found in the materials used in shotgun sports like clays and cartridges and of the current situation of legislation concerning shotgun sports.
By processing the study material through statistical methods, background information of the ranges is collected. Maps of soil contamination and sampling are processed using geospatial and image processing software. The processed data is formed into combined images of skeet and trap ranges with the distribution of their soil contamination and soil sampling points.
As a result of this thesis, the resulting images present a model of how soil contamination is distributed, but at the same time it shows the distribution of soil sampling points. The resulting images do not follow the theoretical models studied, and thus it is recommended that the study should be repeated with an equal amount of research material. The theoretical models of shot distribution presented in the literature review are still a good reference when planning soil contamination research on shotgun grounds if no further information is available.
