This study examines the potential impact of European wood-based biochar industry on biomass demand, and identifies the competitive business models and end-user market developments required for biochar to become a scalable and economically viable alternative to fossil-derived materials. A qualitative research approach bridges the gap between theoretical market models and operational reality. A comprehensive literature review was used to establish a central hypothesis, which was subsequently evaluated against primary empirical data gathered through five semi-structured company interviews and a case study of an industrial production facility. The findings largely confirmed the central hypothesis, while challenging the assumption that co-location with energy infrastructure represents a definitive pathway to economic viability. Instead, systematic coordination among diverse stakeholders and market actors is required to address market complexities and support sector growth. To this end, the study proposes a framework termed the "Toolbox Approach," which outlines the components necessary to scale a biochar business for industrial applications.
The findings further indicate that, until regulatory frameworks artificially close the price gap with fossil fuels, the industry will continue to rely on complex, multi-revenue survival models and voluntary carbon markets to remain profitable in an immature market. While substituting fossil coke and coal is technically feasible within Europe's metallurgical sector, widespread adoption is currently hindered by a significant price differential, overstated production capacities, and the distorting influence of aggressive green lobbying.
