Tiivistelmä
Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on ymmärtää geopoliittisten konfliktien vaikutusta osakemarkkinoihin. Tarkemmin ottaen tutkimuksessa on keskitytty tarkastelemaan miten Yhdysvaltojen 3.1.2026 tekemä sotilaallinen interventio Venezuelaan, sekä maan presidentti Nicolás Maduron kaappaus vaikutti Yhdysvaltojen osakemarkkinoihin.
The objective of this study is to understand the impact of geopolitical conflicts on the stock market. More specifically, the research focuses on examining how the U.S. military intervention in Venezuela on January 3, 2026, and the subsequent ousting of President Nicolás Maduro affected the U.S. stock market. The study was conducted as a quantitative event study, which, due to the nature of the conflict, analyzed the stock performance of U.S. defense and energy sector companies during the period surrounding the event.
The empirical results indicate that this type of military conflict increased the stock prices of defense sector companies in the short term, whereas the impact on energy sector companies was less significant. The effects of other simultaneous news flows surrounding the event have also been considered when analyzing the results. For instance, Donald Trump's announcements regarding Iran the day before the intervention boosted stock prices in both the defense and energy sectors. Furthermore, three days after the event, Trump announced changes to the U.S. defense budget and outlined how Venezuela's oil reserves would be utilized in the future. These announcements can be viewed as distinct from the initial event, even though the utilization of oil reserves is a direct consequence of it. Regarding the defense sector, the results show a positive correlation with similar previous studies, confirming that military conflicts tend to benefit companies in this industry. In contrast, the same cannot be said for the energy sector, as those companies are more heavily influenced by raw material markets as well as other political and geopolitical factors.
