Tiivistelmä
Electric boilers and large heat pumps are among the largest flexible loads entering the Nordic power system, and their value depends on day-ahead and reserve markets that shift as variable renewable energy (VRE) generation grows toward 2035. The market value of three electrified-heat archetypes is examined and compared: a standalone electric boiler, an electric boiler with thermal storage, and a large heat pump.
Two questions are addressed in parallel: how the market value of each archetype evolves toward 2035, and how large-scale deployment of electrified heat reshapes the spot and reserve prices that this value rests on. Studying these together within a single comparative ranking, rather than as the separate system-level and asset-level problems they are usually treated as, is the contribution.
All three carry the same annual heat duty, a Finnish heating-degree-day profile, so that differences in value follow from price, efficiency, reserve eligibility and storage timing rather than from differing run hours. Each is dispatched against 2025 to 2026 Finnish dayahead spot and manual frequency restoration reserve (mFRR) prices. Their value is then reevaluated under three 2035 scenarios (Reference, Electrification-led, and VRE-led). Each scenario reshapes the price series so that large-scale deployment bids up the cheap hours an asset relies on.
No single technology wins outright; the ranking changes with the scenario and with the markets counted. The heat pump leads on spot value in every scenario through its coefficient of performance; once mFRR energy and capacity are added, the storage boiler leads in today's market and the VRE-led future. The heat pump regains the lead under heavy electrification. Because each archetype is strongest under a different future and market, the most resilient design is not a single technology but a hybrid: a heat pump for efficient baseload, a boiler and thermal storage for reserve participation and cheap-hour shifting, and a firm, low-cost fuel such as biomass to cap the most expensive hours.
