Software development contributes to environmental impacts through energy consumption and resource utilization. Although green coding practices have been broadly discussed in the literature, their integration into daily agile software development is limited. This thesis addresses this challenge by designing and evaluating the Green Coding Awareness Framework (GCAF). The framework is intended to support awareness of green coding within agile teams.
The study follows the design science research (DSR) methodology and draws on green coding literature, agile development practices, Organizational Learning Theory, and the Theory of Planned Behavior. The developed framework integrates sustainability-related prompts, checklists, and reflection mechanisms into agile development activities.
The framework was evaluated through a scenario-based demonstration involving software practitioners and software engineering students. The results indicate positive perceptions regarding the framework’s feasibility, applicability, and usefulness for increasing awareness of green coding considerations in agile software development.
The main contribution of this thesis is a practical, awareness-oriented framework that supports the integration of green coding considerations into agile software development processes.
