Tiivistelmä

Waste management is an essential factor in environmental protection, and the colour coding of municipal waste bins is one of the key elements to help citizens correctly sort their waste. Colour codes for bins are used worldwide, but there is no universal code, and even between cities, within countries there is a large variation in the codes used. The thesis compares the colour coding systems for municipal waste containers in Europe, USA, Asia, Africa, Middle East and Australia and Oceania. The study employs a qualitative comparative literature review approach, which utilizes secondary sources exclusively (peer-reviewed journal articles, government policy statements, and reports from international institutions) to explore how cultural, governance, and infrastructural conditions influence decisions on the use of colour systems in various national contexts.

The results indicate that the colour blue is generally used for recyclables, green or brown for organic waste, but the same colour often has multiple meanings in different countries, and regions like Sub-Saharan Africa have no color-coding systems of waste container that have been documented formally. Empirical evidence has shown that the colour of the bins, their visibility and their location have a direct effect on sorting behaviour, but colour coding without public education and consistent enforcement will not work.

At the EU level, the proposed Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is the most advanced approach towards standardisation, and there is significant progress at national level in countries like Australia and China. The thesis ends by stating that a system that is harmonised globally would be desirable, but it is difficult to overcome cultural, financial and governance hurdles. Any future harmonisation should be done in a way that ensures the colours are used in a consistent manner globally, but with enough flexibility to meet local needs and cultural associations.
