In Finland, wind power developers are increasingly interested in integrating battery energy storage systems into wind farms to create hybrid power plants. These energy storage systems can support wind power generation by mitigating forecast errors and avoiding balance error fees, participating in reserve markets and loading and unloading electricity into the electricity market in response to price fluctuations. Furthermore, companies benefit from co-locating the energy storage facility under the same grid connection permit and utilizing a shared substation.
This Master’s thesis examines the construction of hybrid power plants from a contractor’s perspective as part of wind farm project. The objective is to identify solutions to the primary technical challenges and to research alternative methods for meeting hybrid power plant reactive power capacity requirements compared to traditional wind farm setups and whether it will result in cost savings for the project.
The study was conducted through a literature review and interviews with industry experts to identify current implementation methods and needs. The results indicate that the most significant challenges relate to hybrid power plant controller. Although there are options for implementing reactive power capacity, separate additional compensation for both the wind farm and the BESS systems is still justified. However, the potential tightening of power quality requirements for inverter-based electricity generation may change this approach in the near future.
