Tiivistelmä
Virtual durability testing of products is commonly used by companies. There is a growing interest in studying the product’s durability throughout the logistics chain, which requires a reliable material model of the packaging material as well. In this thesis, an anisotropic elastic plastic material model for C-flute corrugated cardboard is developed.
The work is carried out using finite element method software LS-Dyna, where the numerical behavior of the developed material model is systematically correlated with results obtained from physical experiments of the packaging material. The thesis studies the viability of two modelling methods: (a) a composite laminate model consisting of the liners and a homogenized fluting equivalent, and (b) a single shell layer.
The results indicate that a composite laminate material model with a homogenized fluting equivalent material can represent the complicated mechanical behavior of corrugated cardboard in a computationally efficient and reliable manner. Simplifying the flute geometry limits the simulation of local buckling in the fluting and liner layers but represents the board’s macro behavior accurately. Meanwhile, a single shell layer model can either represent the membrane behavior or the bending behavior, but not both simultaneously.
This thesis bridges the gap between corrugated board material models with physical experimentation to ensure correlation with the real behavior of the material.
