Tiivistelmä
This thesis examines the utilization of agricultural and forestry side streams for biocoal production in Finland. The study focuses on the availability and suitability of biomass side streams, biocoal production technologies, the sustainability of biocoal, and its current and future role in the Finnish energy system. The research was conducted as a literature review.
The results show that Finland has a substantial resource base for biocoal production due to its large forestry industry and agricultural production. Forestry side streams, including wood-processing by-products and forest harvesting residues, are generally the most suitable feedstocks for biocoal production because of their high lignocellulosic content and lower ash and alkali metal concentrations compared to most agricultural residues. Agricultural side streams generally have higher moisture and ash contents, making them more suitable for alternative uses.
Torrefaction is identified as the most suitable technology for producing biocoal. Torrefaction increases energy density, hydrophobicity and grindability, while reducing moisture and volatile content. Compared with raw biomass, torrefied biocoal therefore has improved properties for storage, transport and combustion.
The current role of torrefied biocoal in Finland remains limited, with no commercial success and production mainly limited to research and development. The results indicate that the future of biocoal in Finland may lie in heavy industry, particularly steel and cement production, rather than in replacing coal in power generation.
Torrefiointi todetaan soveltuvimmaksi teknologiaksi biohiilen tuotantoon.
