Tiivistelmä
This thesis examines when an extreme value spread becomes an investable signal for predicting realised value premiums in U.S. equities over 1927–2025. The main analysis uses post-1963 nested predictive regressions with Newey-West HAC standard errors, adding the Carhart momentum factor, a value-side momentum-spread variable and Fama-French controls. As of late 2025 the book-to-market spread sits near its historical extreme, above its 80th percentile for over one hundred months.
Four hypotheses test the momentum-conditioning of the spread (H1), its persistence through spread age (H2), the combined specification (H3) and the measurement validity of the book-to-market spread relative to cash-flow- and earnings-based alternatives (H4). First, the momentum-conditioning of the value-spread level is statistically insignificant on the modern sample for every valuation metric: the book-to-market interaction is concentrated in the 1927–1945 sub-period, and the cash-flow-to-price interaction, although negative, is insignificant. The cash-flow- and earnings-based spreads (CF/P and E/P) lean in the H1-consistent direction only as a weak directional tendency, reaching 5 % significance solely for E/P in 1990–2009. Second, the predictable component that survives is the value-side return-flow dispersion introduced in this thesis (MomSpread): both its interaction with the value spread and its level term are significant at the 5 % level, so recent value-minus-growth return dispersion, rather than the level of the spread, carries the most robust conditioning information in the modern specification. Third, book-to-market has become modestly more extreme than the earnings-based spread after 2010 and only marginally more so than the cash-flow spread, though all three now stand at historical extremes. An exposure-fair timing tilt is practically indistinguishable from passive value on every metric. The results sharpen the factor-timing critique: the binding constraint is the spread-level conditioning concept itself rather than the choice of valuation metric.
