Tiivistelmä
This thesis examines the accuracy of the Gordon's growth model (GGM) and the P/E model for stock valuation in the U.S. stock market over 2014-2023. The study consists of 30 firms from three sectors: financials, industrials and consumer staples. In addition to the overall accuracy comparison, it is tested whether the size of a firm, earnings growth, sector or the COVID period affect the accuracy of the models. As a statistical method, pooled OLS is utilized for the panel data structure.
The results showed that both models had the ability to produce relatively accurate valuations. However, especially the GGM was found to be inconsistent across firms. For the GGM, earnings growth and the sector of a firm were found to have an association with the valuation accuracy. For the P/E model, firm's size and sector were associated with valuation accuracy. The COVID period had no statistically significant effect on either model. Overall, the P/E model was found to produce more accurate valuation than the GGM. The earnings growth was found to be the only variable associated with the difference in accuracy between the models, while size, sector or the COVID period were found to have no effect.
The results of this thesis mostly align with the previous empirical findings and theoretical framework. Small differences can be explained with the specifications of the models' that were done to ensure the comparability.
