This master’s thesis is made for Efora Oy, which is responsible for the maintenance of Stora Enso Imatra board mills. The objective was to find out the reason for much higher amount of drying cylinder bearing failures of Imatra Boardmachine 5 compared to other three board machines in the Imatra Mills. The emphasis was the working conditions of the bearings.
To reach the objective the circulation lubrication systems, oils, lubrication conditions, the conditions of the oils in use and the monitoring of the oil condition are examined. Also the bearing loads are estimated. From the literature the structure and functionality of a board machine, the theory of lubrication and bearing failures and the properties and composition of industrial lubricants are reviewed.
During the comparative examinations of the different board machines in the Imatra Mills no explanatory differences could be found between the machines, although the cleanliness of the lubrication oil of Board Machine 5 was worse than with the other board machines. It was also found out that some of the bearings are run with loads smaller than the bearing minimum radial loading.
Running the bearing with a smaller load than the minimum radial loading can lead the faulty functioning and failing of the bearing. The lubrication conditions were identified to be very difficult, and this will with no doubt affect the service life of both the lubrication oils and the bearings.
