Determination of decomposition products of flotation collector chemicals using capillary electrophoresis

Tiivistelmä
Vaahdotusta käytetään yleisesti erottamaan eri mineraaleja malmista. Eräs tärkeimmistä kokoojakemikaalien ryhmistä on ksantaatit. Ksantaateilla on havaittu taipumusta hajota useiksi erilaisiksi hajoamistuotteiksi vaahdotusprosessin aikana.
Froth flotation is commonly applied method for the separation of valuable minerals from gangue. In this method special surfactants, known as collectors, are used to form target minerals hydrophobic and separate them from hydrophilic particles with aid of air bubbles. One of the most important groups of collectors is xanthates. It is noted, that xanthates has a tendency to decompose to various decomposition products during the flotation process. These decomposition products may have many detrimental effects on the results of froth flotation. The detection and determination of these products are important for better understanding of the froth flotation process.
In the literature part of this thesis the froth flotation process, xanthates and their most general decomposition products are presented, as well as the applied analysis method, capillary electrophoresis. In the experimental part a suitable separation method were examined for the separation of ethyl xanthate, ethyl thiocarbonate, ethyl perxanthate, and ethyl xanthyl thiosulfate using capillary electrophoresis. Mainly two separation methods were focused. The first method was able to separate all examined products in pure water samples, and the second method was suitable for the separation of these products in process water samples. The latter method was tested in practice at a concentrator plant, where it was able to separate isobutyl xanthate, isobutyl thiocarbonate, and most probably isobutyl perxanthate.
